you can do anything....but should you? a crack in your foundation poses a large risk of water infiltration, which can cause damage to current and future finishes and/or mold growth that will affect air quality in your home. it's best to leave it to a professional. the usual diy kits sold at major big box stores are enticing and seem cost effective, but without the background knowledge of how to apply the injection or patching material, how do you know it will work? it’s also important to understand the behaviors of the materials being used (expansion limits of the polyurethane, or lack thereof when using epoxy), surface preparation for surface mounted solutions, crack identification for structural issues or not; and application knowledge using high and low pressure to fill voids. foundation repair does not allow for any margin of error. there are practices of improving water management around your foundation that are better suited for diy projects, like snow clearing and downspout management. if done successfully, these practices are critical in preventing water from getting into your home and can easily be handled by the average homeowner, with some direction from a professional on the correct materials to use and grading strategy.
-
a vertical crack is caused by a shifting in the foundation along the length of the footing. a horizontal crack is usually caused by a lateral force on an outside wall. both are fixable.
-
yes. water is a major concern and will damage interior finishes, induce mould growth and potentially affect air quality throughout the house. if you discover water leaking through a crack in your foundation, clean the water up, contain it and call us.
